Mine is quite bit more involved since it's an overall ledger (banking, credit cards, loans, investments, etc.), and ties in ledgers, revenue and expense schedules, budgets, financing schedules, investment gains/losses, and an overall financial snapshot. I have a few other columns I use, which may be a bit more complicated than what you're wanting to track: subcategory, split entry (for a single transaction belonging to multiple categories, so the amounts can be broken down), financing line (related to a single financial account with multiple amounts associated with different payment terms). If I want a balance as of a certain date, I can set the column to "as of" to calculate my balance as of that transaction. Instead, I use a column to identify a transaction's status (e.g., pending). Then, format the column headings so that they are bold and easy to read, and adjust the cell formatting to account for currency and dates. I don't use a balance column, because I'm generally not interested in it once the date's passed. To create a simple checkbook register with Microsoft Excel, open a blank spreadsheet and create column labels that would be in a paper register, like Date, Check Number, and Payee. My summary information is also showing things like my cleared balance (balance I'd see with the financial institution if I logged into my account), my expected balance (what it'd be if all transactions were cleared), and pending balance (what hasn't cleared), along with other things. I have summary info above my table, which allows me to automatically extend the table while still showing my summary information.
